Dave Cole, (now Dr Dave Cole, and as in MD), and me at Mountain High Ski Resort in Wrightwood, CA.  After the record snow in December 1984, the ski season was fantastic.  Dave, Mike Canada and I would go up to Mountain High almost every Tuesday and Friday in 1985.

Camping in the Angeles National Forrest, Sept 1985

This camp site is Lightening Point near Mt Gleason in the Angeles National Forrest, I went back up to this site and camped at Messenger Flats near by a month or so ago.  There was a massive fire in the forest last week and it burned from the LA side all the way across to this area, so, this area has been destroyed.  The fire camp that we passed getting to the site was also destroyed and the two firefighters that were killed were on the same road we used to get to the site.  I am very glad that I got to return here before the devasting fire even hiked  up to the top of Mt Gleason.  I also visited the Lightening Point campground that we stayed at.

This is a group camping trip, left to right, sitting/stooping, me, Dave Cole, Mike McGrath, wife, standing left to right, Dennis Floyd, Debbie Floyd, Jeff Todd, Dave Larson, Craig, Gary Christian, Duane Bennett, Dan Gosset, ?, Karen Bennett.

And, Party Central, 1106 Dole Place, Palmdale.  After the arrival of Mark McLauchlin, Alan Raetz, and Glenn Bryant, the four of us moved in to this house with a big yard, pool and we also got the house dog, "Wolfe".  I went by the house a few months ago, it is still there.  It was challenging to find it as the area around this has changed significantly.

And, one of those many parties at the Dole Place house and the party masters, Mark and Al, with Jeff Champine throwing darts.

Dennis Floyd's bachelor party at Dole Place, with the gang, I won't even try to list all of these folks.

John West Retirement Party-September 3, 1986

John West Retirement Party-Sept 3, 1986-I first met John just after starting my job at Boeing Wichita in January 1984.  John worked in the lab and I spent a lot of time in the lab.  We both travelled to Edwards around the same time in 1984.  John was assisting us with a post flight exercise.  One of the pilots on the flight crew was ending his career with this flight and the Air Force CFR, (firefighters), sprayed the crew as they exited the airplane.  The hatch doors were wet from that event and when John was coming down with data tapes, he slipped and fell out of the aircraft, breaking his leg.  This event drove John to his retirement.  John was one of the nicest guys I worked with at Boeing.  He and Milo Stock, our two senior lab techs, were really two fine people.

And, the Landcruiser Era!

Landcruiser Beginning:  From my childhood, I always loved Landcruisers.  One of my good friends in college had one and when Chuck Younts bought one, I was hooked to get my own.  Chuck found this one for sale in the San Fernando valley, I bought it, Chuck helped me haul it home on a trailer, (the engine was in pieces so not drivable).  And, with Al's coaching, I rebuilt and put a Chevy 350 in it.  I still have it today!  It is showing the lack of attention over the last several years due to work and house priorities but it is on the list of to do's for next year.  We were dropping the new engine in here in this photo and Glenn's K car in the background, and all at the Dole house, of course.  Photo taken December 1986.

Dave Larsen and Mike Canada, at Alta, UT.  This is my truck with the bed.  This was our configuration for many ski trips to Mammoth, one passenger in the front and one sleeping in the bed in the back.  December 1986.

Mexico

And, the Chili Cookoffs in Rosamond, who could forget?

And, as we extended our radius of exploration, Mexico became a regular location for the weekends.  This is Hussongs Cantina in November 1987, one of the first trips.

Thanksgiving 1986, Dave Larson, me and Alan Raetz at Hussongs Cantina, Ensenada, MX

Our regular hotel in Ensenada, The Villa Fontanna.  It is still there!  I have not been there in a few years but my last trip a few years ago brought back so many memories of our days cruising down Avenida Lopez Mateos, eating at Las Brisas, (one of Calvin's favorites), drinks at Papa's and Beer, fun at Bananas, and the fish tacos on the street.

1987

The Softball Team

Our softball team uniform, I still have it!

We had our Boeing softball teams that competed in the Lancaster city league.  We even started a fast pitch league, I am catching here in the fast pitch.  Joe Flemming was our star pitcher.  Matt Jorski took over managing the teams in later years.  And, don't forget those nights at Schooners!  The good old days!

Here is the Scabs team, we now have Dennis Harlan on the team, a star from the beginning!  1987

And, Dennis Harlan driving another hit, wow, another Manny Ramirez, (RBI Machine).

And, of course, ONLY IN LA, snowing one weekend, on the beach the next.  March 1988 in Baja California, MX.  Mark Pohlkamp and Danny Duarte, Mark surfing, Danny, well, Danny being Danny.  On a beach near La Mission, near Ensenada.  We spent a lot of time on this beach where we could drive out on it and party the day away!

And, the Mexico beach is great for 4x4's, drive right out to the water, set up, crank up the music, get out the beers, oh wait, that is not a 4x4, who is the dumb #$%& that drove this little Isuzu 2x2 on the beach and is obviously stuck in the sand, is that Calvin Hashimoto?  Or, was Jackie driving?

And, another party, wow, we always found some occasion for one of these.Debi D'Ambrosia and Mike McGrath.

And, it's Budda, better known as Dennis Harlan and Mike Kraus, and, note the propeller above Dennis' head?

Dennis Floyd, I am note sure what the hell I said to him here but not a good face here Dennis!

The End of the Joe Flemming Era

Joe Flemming's last Game, Summer 1989.  Champagne Time!  Joe was our manager, coach, pitcher, both slow pitch and fast pitch.  I was the catcher for this Boeing Fast Pitch team, and I still have the trophies!

Me catching one of Joe's plethora of pitches, (fast ball exceeding 90 MPH, slider, very slow curve ball, split finger fast ball and even a knuckler once in a while).

Joe's last game, watch out of for the $5 Champagne!  Me spraying Joe at Lancaster City Park, where the B52 team broke so many records that many still stand today.  And, don't forget those Schooners post game debriefs to plan the next match.

And, Joe drinking that cheap Champagne!

Joe's going away party, August 1989, many came and left the B52 crowd over the years, these events were a very mixed emotion for us.

Joe busy with something and I look bored, and the rest of these folks, I said face the camera dammit.

Mark Pohlkamp's girlfriend visiting Mark and with the Landcruiser, in front of Matt Jorski's house where Matt, Mike Grant and I lived.

Robin, Mark Pohlkamp and Mark's friend from college, Joe Sevasia, taken at J Sloans bar at Melrose and San Vicente, along with the Hard Rock Cafe at Beverly and San Vicente, was one of our regular hang outs "in the day".  The bar that was J Sloans is no longer, (not sure it is even a bar any longer but the building is still there), the Hard Rock finally closed a few years ago.  This was the original Hard Rock in the USA, started based on the original in London, opened in 1984, one of my favorite places and so many memories so seeing it boarded up today is sad.  It is vacant today.

Mike Canada Bachelor Party, October 1989, going around the room, Mike Kraus, ?, (B2 crew from Seattle guys).

Is that Mike Grant doing something to that lady?

Chilli Cookoff in Rosamond, CA, This was the international final here and held here for many years.  This was actually one of the last years in Rosamond.  The International Chilli Cookoff was held here from 1979 to 1991 in Rosamond and well attended by many actors including Ernist Borgnine.  Shown here are Brian Dulac, Joe Sevasia, (Mark's friend), Mark Pohlkamp, ?, me.  Learn more about the ICS history by clicking here.

And, one of the most memorable moments of my life, a major league baseball "All Star" game in Anaheim Stadium.  This was July 11, 1989.  Joe entered the 'lottery' and won four tickets and invited me along with Jack O and some others.  Anaheim Stadium has been remodeled to accommodate baseball only now, here it was still hosting the Rams.  I have always been a big baseball fan and to get to see an "All Star" game was off the hook, thanks to Joe.  I am a Dodger season ticket holder, go to over 50 games a year, live ten minutes to the stadium, have been to many playoff game.

Joe and I in the crowd.

Dave Ingersoll's 30th Birthday Party, and if I say this is 1989, I am NOT saying his age.  Dave, how old are you?

Duane Bennett, the best manager of any instrumentation group at Edwards working B-52 projects, (OK, just kidding but Duane is right up there with the best managers I ever worked for then and still to this day).

A typical Saturday afternoon at the Jorski house in Lancaster, Mike rooting on those Sooner's, drinking his Bud and Scope.

1991-The End of the Era for Me

I departed for Seattle in March 1991 so for me, this was the end of the era of living in The Antelope Valley, Edwards AFB, flightlines, and a fantastic group of folks.
