Chicago Visit, September 2011 Me at Harry Carey monument, Wrigley Field. Cubs Game, the bleacher perspective: Chicago Architecture Tour, Chicago River And Other City Pictures St. Louis Camping at Lake Isabella, July 2011 I went camping with the regular camping crew at Lake Isabella. Sammy and I went white water rafting on the Upper Kern River. It was a record year for snowfall and river flow. We went on Class IV, (the maximum for rafting in California is Class 5). I have done this a few other times including another stint on this section but one thing that I have never experienced occurred this trip, we flipped the raft in a rapid on a large rock. The entire raft flipped up and over, knocking all occupants out of the raft. We were on our own going through the rapids, in the water. As we floated throuth the intense white water and emerged from the challenging area, other rafts pulled us in. It was a lifetime experience and I have no desire to go through this again. Tour of 787 Flight Test Airplane Some former Boeing co-workers, (Kevin Krantz and Roger Cole), gave me a tour of one of the 787 Dreamliner flight test aircraft. The airplane was based out of Victorville, CA. Since the visit, the airplane was the first deliverd airplane to ANA Airlines of Japan. Kevin is assigned to this airplane and working with ANA in support of the airplane that is now in service. LA Laker Game (ROW 3 Behind the Lakers Bench)-January 2011 Opening presents, Mom was not feeling good so absent from pictures. O'Hare snowplows. I arrived on December 21 and the weather conditions were poor. My connection to Indy was cancelled and I ended up spending the night at the O'Hare Hilton, which is a short walk from the terminal and finally got out 28 hours later on December 22. The snowman Sam and I built, I guess he did not want to be attached as a co-creator and was not in the picture but Lucky was more than happy to claim responsibility. The famous bowling games, well, infamous from Cathy's perspective. We bowled two different days at the Vigo Bowl in Terre Haute. The first day, it was Jay, Cathy, Sam, Paul and I, (Dan was working). The second day, Jay dropped out and Dan joined, these photos are from the second day. My cousin's husband, Mike Kukla, purchased four tickets behind the dugout for the Cubs-St Louis Cardinals game in August 2011. We attended the Saturday and Sunday games. I met Dad and Dan in Terre Haute, we took Amtrak to Chicago on Friday and met Mike. We stayed at the Residence Inn just north of the River in downtown. We took the train to the field each day. Sunday, Mike acquired a limo to pick us up at Wrigley to take Dad and Dan to the train station and Mike and I on to O'hare to fly out. It was a fun filled weekend. This photo shows our seats from the television view. TV STARS! Our seats, nobody in front of us! Waiting on the train in Mattoon, IL and Dan and Dad on train northbound. Wow, something rarely seen in Chicago! Haymarket Square-"Over the years, the site of the Haymarket bombing has become a powerful symbol for a diverse cross-section of people, ideals and movements. Its significance touches on the issues of free speech, the right of public assembly, organized labor, the fight for the eight-hour workday, law enforcement, justice, anarchy, and the right of every human being to pursue an equitable prosperous life. For all, it is a poignant less in the rewards and consequences inherent in such human pursuits." From the marker. Dad and Dan at Harry's Carey's restaurant in downtown Chicago. Terre Haute Visit-August 8th Weekend, 2010 I visited Terre Haute the weekend before the Cubs game weekend and we went to have brunch at the original site of Ft Henry Harrison in Terre Haute, on the Wabash River. Fort Harrison and river views from fort. Remains of old Yacht Club that occupied the fort grounds. San Francisco Weekend-May 2010 My softball team traveled to San Francisco for a weekend tournament over Memorial Day 2011. The tournament was in the city. This is the first time I have played at parks in the city in many years. Tournaments are usually so big they have to use suburban complexes to accommodate the number of teams. It was fun staying and playing in the city. We did some sight seeing in spare time. Harbor tour-Sam and I on the boat, going under the Golden Gate Bridge, and Alcatraz from the water. Trolley Ride-This was the first time I have ridden a trolley in San Francisco. It is so much fun and the woodworking in the cable cars are so phenomenal. Superbowl Party 2010 at Cathy and Jay's Thanksgiving 2009 at Cathy and Jay's Hollywood Sign Hike-Summer 2009 I hiked up the mountain that the Hollywood Sign is located on. I hiked to the top above the sign to the communication antennas. From this location, you can see both the LA Basin, including downtown LA and Hollywood, and on the north side, you can see the San Fernando Valley, all from the one peak, amazing views. Mary's Visit October 2005-My sister Mary came to visit for a long weekend in October. We went to The Getty, The Huntington Memorial Gardens and Library, ate Korean BBQ, and many of the usual suspect places. I went to Puerto Rico for a week in March 2005, (my fifth time in Puerto Rico). I spent most of my time in San Juan but visitied the Vieques Island for a few days. For a slide show, click here. Some selected photos below: The Fort at Isabella Segunda, Vieques Island The lighthouse at Vieques Island built by the Spanish. My transportation around the island. LA Rainfall-The second rainiest season ever recorded! The rainfall total for the season is now on the second rainiest ever recorded, with the old record back in 1898. We are 2.3 inches away from that record as of March 28, 2005. Our rainfall season goes from July 1 to June 30. This is done because we get all our rain in the winter and it never rains in the summer. A calendar would split the rain season in half and not be a good metric for the intensity of a winter rain season such as this one. We are around 38 inches of rain since July 1, 2004 to date. Due to all of this rain, we have seen hillslides, roads washing out and even thunderstorms in the LA Basin and some tornadic acticity, (water spouts when over the ocean). At my house alone, we got over ten inches of rain over a few days, streets turned in to rivers. It is possible that we may not get any more rain until after June 30. Our average June rainfall is only 0.01 inches for the entire month. Each month gets more and mroe dry so who knows. Below are a few pictures I captured in my neighborhood but this is not even near what is was at it's worst, (it was raining too hard to get out and take pictures of the street).
My parents, sister and nephew spent a long weekend with me to see my new place and to visit. I rented a large Excursion to haul us around town and got a room at the Renansance Hotel in Hollywood at the Hollywood and Highland complex. This hotel is famous for all of the actors that come to LA to visit and for shows at the Kodak Theater. We had a suite on the 21st floor, near the top! Below are a few pictures from that visit.
View from the hotel room including the famous Capitol Records Building and other old Hollywood landmarks and view of downtown in the distance. The transportation for the weekend. And, dinner at Lawry's in Beverly Hills! And a trip to see Ladder 49 at the El Capitan Theater at Hollywood and Highland. Breakfeast at Mel's Drive In in West Hollywood on the Sunset Strip the first day. And, chicken and waffles at the world famous Rosco's Chicken and Waffles in Hollywood.
